Space had been reserved in this month’s Newsletter to congratulate Ken Stubenrauch on becoming a recipient of the 2019 CT Hort Service Award. At our June meeting, Justine Ramsey presented Past-President Ken Stubenrauch with the award.
In her presentation, Justine spoke of Ken’s 15-year commitment to CT Hort that began when his wife Joan had become very involved. For several years, Ken worked behind the scenes on the Flower Show. He was someone who was always willing to step-up when needed without giving it a second thought. Ken stepped up as President when CT Hort needed one and did a wonderful job. Over the years he served on the board of directors, was on the Nominating and Finance committees, and held the role of Treasurer as his background was in engineering, marketing and finance – NOT plants! Even so, Ken remained steadfastly committed to CT Hort.
In preparation for presenting the award, Justine spoke with Ken and asked what had attracted him to become so involved. Ken quickly responded that he was drawn to the camaraderie within the Society. People come to CT Hort for different reasons, but many enjoy learning from trusted gardeners and meeting friends along the way.
Unfortunately, we also must also use this space to say goodbye to Ken as he passed on August 12. As is mentioned in his obituary, Ken loved the New England area, especially Glastonbury where he and his wife Joan lived for 48 years. He enjoyed skiing, world-wide travel with Joan, serving as president for the Connecticut Horticultural Society, rooting for the UCONN women’s basketball team (including several Final Four games), fine food and wine. Family was a very important to Ken. He and Joan made themselves readily available to enjoy events with their families.
A celebration of Ken’s life will be held September 28th at 3:00 p.m. at Glastonbury Funeral Home, 450 New London Turnpike in Glastonbury. For more information or to send an online condolence, visit www.glastonburyfuneral.com. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made to the Connecticut Horticultural Society, 2433 Main St. #1, Rocky Hill, CT 06067
