SUMMARY:Gardening Like the Forest: Designing Edible Ecosystems for Homes and Communities with David Jacke
DESCRIPTION:Gardening Like the Forest: Designing Edible Ecosystems for Homes and Communities with David Jacke\nNovember 19\, 2026\, 7pm\nOn Zoom and in person at Congregation Beth Israel\, 701 Farmington Avenue\, West Hartford\nMembers are free; non-members $10\n(Members will receive the Zoom link the Sunday before the talk.) \nHealthy forests maintain\, fertilize\, and renew themselves\, naturally. Meanwhile\, agriculture as we know it is arguably the most ecologically destructive force on Earth. Enter “ecosystem agriculture\,” a synthesis of ecology\, design\, and agriculture aiming to design abundant food-producing ecosystems that mimic healthy natural communities. For example\, edible forest gardens mimic the structure and function of natural forests while growing food\, fuel\, fiber\, fodder\, fertilizers\, farmaceuticals\, and fun! Can we meet our own needs and regenerate healthy landscapes\, communities\, and ecosystems at the same time? Let’s explore the vision of ecosystem agriculture\, a little history\, some science\, a few examples\, and a sampling of some useful perennial edibles you can use in your own gardens. \nDave Jacke is the lead author of the award winning two-volume book Edible Forest Gardens. An engaging and passionate educator\, Dave is also a meticulous designer. He has studied ecology and design since the 1970s and has run his own firm—Dynamics Ecological Design—since 1984. He has designed\, built\, planted\, and managed landscapes\, homes\, farms\, and communities around North America\, as well as overseas\, and inhabited forest gardens at his current and past homesteads. He holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies from Simon’s Rock College (1980) and a M.A. in Landscape Design from the Conway School of Landscape Design (1984). SUMMARY:Expanding your Daylily Garden Horizons with Natives and Other Perennials
DESCRIPTION:The Connecticut Daylily Society invites you to join us at our November 7 meeting to enjoy a program by Nancy DuBrule-Clemente on “other” plants to grow in our daylily gardens. Nancy grows and loves daylilies in her home garden and has many great ideas to make them more beautiful with other plants\, especially those that support pollinators and other creatures! Nancy will share some of her favorite perennials\, grasses\, groundcovers\, and small shrubs that we can easily grow in our daylily gardens to enhance multi-season interest and to nurture pollinators. Many of these will be natives! \nSocial hour with light refreshments (bring a sandwich?) will begin at noon and Nancy’s program will begin Saturday\, November 7 at 1 at Sycamore Hills Recreation Center (aka Avon Senior Center) at 635 West Avon Road). There will be door prizes at the end of the meeting and Greg Haggett’s 2027 daylily photo calendar will be available for purchase. Contact us via Rebecca Nisley at 860-306-6315 or check out our webpage at ctdaylilyclub.com. \nNancy DuBrule-Clemente founded her garden store Natureworks in 1983 with a goal of providing organic gardening services to the community. (She recently sold it to her employees in 2021.) She continues to work with Natureworks\, writing the weekly email\, working occasionally at the garden center\, and doing some garden design and supervising garden installations for existing clients. The retail store on RT 22 in Northford is a destination for gardeners all over southern New England with its focus on supporting pollinators\, creating healthy habitats\, encouraging native plants\, and supplying unusual plants to serious gardeners. Nancy graduated from the Rackliffe Hicks School of Agriculture in the 70’s. She has written two books and speaks throughout the state on a wide range of subjects. Nancy is a total garden geek and a passionate organic gardener.

SUMMARY:Connecticut Horticultural Society Presents: 2026 Symposium: “Gardening for ALL Ages” Oct. 24
DESCRIPTION:The Connecticut Horticultural Society’s biennial symposium\, “Gardening for ALL Ages\,” returns in person on October 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Marriott Hartford Cromwell. The daylong event will feature presentations by garden experts Rebecca McMackin\, Christine Darnell\, and Jennifer McGuinness\, followed by “Gardening at Every Age\,” a panel discussion and Q&A moderated by Jim Sirch. Panelists include gardening experts at various stages of life and career: Karen Bussolini\, Nancy DuBrule-Clemente\, Dan Furman\, Eric Mason\, Jennifer McGuinness\, and Jillian Shea. \nThe symposium is designed to inspire\, enlighten\, and educate novice and expert gardeners alike—of all ages. \nOur keynote speaker is Rebecca McMackin\, whose talk is “Adventures in Ecological Horticulture.” Rebecca McMackin has cultivated gorgeous landscapes in the toughest environments possible: urban parks\, school playgrounds\, and the sidewalks of New York City. She will take lessons from her work at Brooklyn Bridge Park\, the Brooklyn Museum\, and decades of research to share how those of us who are fortunate enough to care for land\, can do it beautifully and ecologically. \nChristine Darnell’s will present “Approaching the Garden.” She is a garden and planting design specialist. Her firm\, Christine Darnell Gardens\, offers naturalistic planting design services in the CT area\, and specializes in biodiverse landscapes and beautiful sustainable gardens. SUMMARY:Connecticut Horticultural Society Presents 2026 Symposium: “Gardening for ALL Ages”
Her firm\, Christine Darnell Gardens\, offers naturalistic planting design services in the CT area\, and specializes in biodiverse landscapes and beautiful sustainable gardens. Christine is the vice-chair of Lyme’s Inland Wetlands and Conservation Committee\, serves on the Building and Grounds Committee for the Florence Griswold Museum\, and teaches landscape design for the Connecticut Nursery and Landscape Association\, training the next generation of gardeners\, designers and nursery men and women. \nJennifer McGuinness will discuss “Designing for Birds: Lessons from an Evolving Garden.” Jen McGuinness is a lifelong gardener and the author of the award-winning Bird-Friendly Gardening\, published by Cool Springs Press. SUMMARY:Barn Talk: The Beauty of Decay: Rethinking Dead Wood
DESCRIPTION:October is a fitting time to notice the particular beauty of decay and the quiet work dead wood performs in the landscape. What we’re often tempted to clear away- standing dead trees\, decomposing logs\, and brush piles- provide some of the garden’s richest habitat\, offering wildlife food\, shelter\, and overwintering refuge. As it breaks down\, dead wood enriches the soil\, encourages natural regeneration\, and lends the landscape a sense of age and continuity\, adding texture and character that deepen over time. This program invites gardeners to reconsider dead wood as vital habitat\, part of a healthy woodland system\, and a thoughtful element in managed landscapes.
