SUMMARY:Learning with Nature | Monarch Migration
DESCRIPTION:Join Grace Farms Horticulture Director Kimberly Kelly and experts from Kansas State University for a hands-on field study to safely record\, tag\, and release monarch butterflies throughout Grace Farms 80 acres of landscape.\n\nLearn how to net\, tag\, and record Monarchs in a way that supports the best outcome for healthy butterflies to survive migration\, winter\, the flight north in late spring\, and successful reproduction in late summer. This workshop ends with our a cup of our butterfly pea flower tea and a culinary treat in the Commons.\n\nOver the past few decades\, monarch butterfly populations have declined by close to 90%. As a participant of the Kansas State University’s Monarch Watch program\, Grace Farms has been working to increase the Monarch habitat and this summer we will be participating in the Monarch Watch tagging program.\n\nRecommended for ages 12 and up. Due to uneven terrain for the field portion of the workshop\, strollers\, walkers and wheelchairs are not recommended.

SUMMARY:Barn Talk: Designing Fall Containers: Bold Texture and Seasonal Color
DESCRIPTION:With fall already approaching\, it’s time to rethink your pots and planters for the season ahead. The transition from summer to autumn brings unique environmental challenges\, and well-composed fall containers require more than simply replacing tired annuals. Designer Beth Crowell will reveal the technical and artistic principles behind professional fall container design\, including container preparation\, soil improvement\, and selecting cold-tolerant plants that thrive as temperatures cool and light levels shift. Through carefully chosen examples\, you’ll see how structure\, plant placement\, texture\, form\, and color work together to create displays with lasting impact. Whether you’re designing new containers or refreshing existing ones\, you’ll leave with practical design strategies\, a list of top-performing fall plants\, and a deeper understanding of how professionals create containers that evolve beautifully throughout the season.

SUMMARY:Barn Talk: Gardens as Stories: The Met Cloisters Gardens
DESCRIPTION:The gardens of The Met Cloisters serve as a place of profound refreshment\, curiosity\, and wonder. In this lecture\, Carly Still explores the distinct inspiration behind each of the three interior cloister gardens and the unique stories they tell. The presentation will dive into the essential role of herbs in the Middle Ages\, sharing the tantalizing lore and medieval uses of plants that remain treasures in our own herb gardens today. Carly will also highlight the intersection of the museum’s permanent collection and its living collection\, showing how masterworks of art are brought to life through the flora surrounding them. Come be transported into the evocative world of The Cloisters.

SUMMARY:Barn Talk: Reawakening Beauty: Revitalizing the Landscape of a Historic House
DESCRIPTION:In 2019\, landscape design firm Columbine LLC began a thoughtful restoration of DeRham Farm\, a historic estate overlooking the Hudson River in Garrison\, New York. Working closely with the homeowners\, the project focused on revitalizing the landscape while honoring the property’s historic character and extraordinary setting. Highlights included the restoration of a sunken garden within the remnants of an old foundation and the creation of a vibrant one-third acre native meadow designed to support pollinators and biodiversity.  Join us as we explore the transformation of this remarkable landscape\, and the process of shaping new garden spaces within a historic estate.

SUMMARY:Master Class: Native Plant Seed Saving Workshop at The Fen in Sharon\, CT
DESCRIPTION:Spend an afternoon in the stunning fields of The Fen in Sharon\, Connecticut\, with botanist and seed specialist Heather Liljengren for a hands-on workshop in native seed collection. Set within expansive\, species-rich meadows on a calcareous fen\, The Fen is a native seed farm and regenerative land project seldom open to the public. This off-site field day offers a rare opportunity to learn directly from a field botanist in a working landscape shaped by seasonal rhythms\, native plant communities\, and careful stewardship. Guided by Heather’s deep knowledge of plants and seed ecology\, participants will learn how to recognize seed maturity\, collect seed responsibly\, and clean and prepare native seed for successful planting. Each participant will leave with native ecotype seed they have collected themselves\, ready to plant in their own garden.

SUMMARY:Barn Talk: The Beauty of Decay: Rethinking Dead Wood
DESCRIPTION:October is a fitting time to notice the particular beauty of decay and the quiet work dead wood performs in the landscape. What we’re often tempted to clear away- standing dead trees\, decomposing logs\, and brush piles- provide some of the garden’s richest habitat\, offering wildlife food\, shelter\, and overwintering refuge. As it breaks down\, dead wood enriches the soil\, encourages natural regeneration\, and lends the landscape a sense of age and continuity\, adding texture and character that deepen over time. This program invites gardeners to reconsider dead wood as vital habitat\, part of a healthy woodland system\, and a thoughtful element in managed landscapes.

What distinguishes it from mainstream horticulture? Why is genetic diversity important? Ecological Horticulture takes a different approach from traditional gardening by focusing on nature-friendly principles. This talk will dive into key ideas and challenge common gardening practices. For example: Why is genetic diversity essential? Can I use cultivated versions of native plants? How should climate change influence my gardening choices? These questions and more will guide a discussion on creating and caring for gardens in harmony with the environment. \nUli Lorimer serves as the Director of Horticulture for the Native Plant Trust\, a leading non-profit dedicated to preserving the native flora of the Northeastern United States. In this role\, he oversees the acclaimed Garden in the Woods in Framingham and Nasami Farm in Western Massachusetts\, which focuses on native plant propagation and research. Uli’s impressive career includes positions at the National Arboretum\, Wave Hill\, and as the Curator of Native Plants at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. A lifelong enthusiast of plants and biodiversity\, Uli continues to study the region’s ecosystems\, collect seeds from the wild\, and introduce new plants to collections. \nHe is also a prolific author and speaker\, well-known to audiences across the horticultural community. His publications include Tough Natives for Tough Places and A Native Plant Reader. His latest work\, The Northeast Native Plant Primer\, reflects his deep commitment to native plants and their ecological value. With a science-based approach and a passion for biodiversity\, Uli offers invaluable insights into selecting plants that maximize the ecological impact of our gardens while celebrating the beauty of native flora. \nBrought to you through the generosity of the Lois and Herb Isaacson Endowed Lecture fund and the Wild Ones Mountain Laurel Chapter. \nRegister.
