SUMMARY:Traprock Ridge Hiking Club Hike at West Hartford Reservoir #6
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this hike with TRLC volunteer Dave Mogul at West Hartford Reservoir #6. Although the route may vary due to trail conditions\, the planned hike is a circular loop of about 3 miles using multiple trails (including the Metacomet)\, and it’s expected to take 2-3 hours\, depending on our group’s pace. \nThis is expected to be an easy hike with a limited number of inclines and areas with uneven footing. Since there’s potential for snow and/or ice on the trail\, please wear sturdy shoes or boots that have good traction\, and bring ski poles if you like to use them. \nWe’ll meet at 10:00 a.m. in the northern-most parking lot off Albany Ave (not the one that’s located right inside the property). This lot is accessed by driving through that first lot\, following the road along the reservoir until it ends\, and then making a left at that intersection\, then following the signs past the stop sign to the northern parking lot. \nAlternate date of March 18 if we need to reschedule. Contact Dave Mogul at hikes@trlandconservancy.org with any questions.

SUMMARY:The Elegant and Edible Garden: Designing a Potager (livestream event)
DESCRIPTION:Explore the French tradition of the potager—artful kitchen gardens where colorful flowers\, fruits\, vegetables\, and fragrant herbs grow side by side. Drawing from her award-winning book\, The Elegant and Edible Garden\, author Linda Vater guides you through the process of designing a kitchen garden that is as beautiful as it is productive. \nAt the heart of her approach is the principle that successful kitchen gardens begin not with plants\, but with an honest assessment of time\, lifestyle\, space\, and expectations. Let Linda show you how to identify your priorities and translate them into confident design decisions. Be inspired by a fabulous range of kitchen garden design options – from formal geometric layouts and raised beds to relaxed edible borders and patio containers. Learn to design a potager that is uniquely your own and a delight to both the eye and the palate. \nJoin the live-stream event for the chance to ask questions during the presentation. You will also receive a recording of the session to re-watch at home. \nYour $25 registration fee supports the education programs at our non-profit organization.\n

SUMMARY:Plant Switcheroos for More Beautiful\, Hardy Flower Gardens
DESCRIPTION:This eye-opening lecture will take the guesswork out of which perennials and flowering shrubs are the best choices\, especially for more challenging growing conditions.  You simply cannot tell if a plant is a great performer year after year by looking at a pretty picture or attractively maintained inventory at garden centers.  For over 30 years I have trialed hundreds of plants.  I’m excited to share my results\, as well as those of other reliable plant trials.  Some of the ‘winners’ may surprise you!  Plus I’ll feature outstanding alternatives to commonly grown plants that are heavy reseeders; short-lived; aggressive spreaders; disease or insect prone; native plants to replace exotics; and more. This lecture is best suited for gardeners in hardiness Zones 3-8.\nZOOM LECTURE. Registraiton fee $15.95. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE AT THE LIVE BROADCAST. REGISTRANTS RECEIVE A REPLAY LINK.  https://pyours.com/webinar-plant-switcheroos-for-more-beautiful-flower-gardens/

SUMMARY:Latin for Gardeners
DESCRIPTION:The scientific names for plants intimidate many gardeners. When we use common names\, we run the risk of purchasing the wrong plant or misidentifying plant problems. In this class we will review the history of plant names in the Western world\, why they change and why we as gardeners should make an effort to use these names. It’s not all Greek or Latin\, and we do not worry too much if we don’t pronounce it perfectly. Having this knowledge can expand your gardening expertise.

SUMMARY:Foraging 101 (in-person)
DESCRIPTION:Foraging 101– The Do’s and Don’ts for getting out and finding all that it has to offer \nThis is an introductory class on learning how to forage\, specifically in Connecticut and New England. This class will go over where and when to find forageable items\, what to do with them\, and safety tips. We will go over proper foraging etiquette and some of the tools you will need to get started. In the second half of the class we will go over a number of items\, by season\, that you can easily find in the state. We will also have some items for you to check out and even some yummy items to try as well as a few books on foraging to check out. \nAbout our presenter: Gina Pagano is a vet tech by day\, and began foraging 10 years ago. She found learning the old ways so interesting and was astounded at the amount of knowledge we have forgotten over time. With food safety\, insecurity\, and cost being large issues today\, she wanted to learn what was available in our own back yards. She also finds incredible peace wandering the wild areas of Connecticut in search of items for food\, dyes\, and household use. \nPlease register\, so we can set the community room up with appropriate seating. \nCo-Sponsored by the Avon Library & Avon Clean Energy Commission
