Attendees will walk away with a new perspective on plant selections that enhance texture and structure\, learning how to balance ecological function with an artistic vision. Join us to learn the art of “editing”—an essential practice to refine ever-evolving naturalistic gardens. \nYuki Kaneko is the Senior Horticulture Manager at the High Line where she manages the landscape of the internationally celebrated urban public park in New York City. Born in Japan\, Yuki earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts from Tama Art University and was awarded the Blanchette H. Rockefeller Fellowship to study art in the United States. She received certificates from the New York Botanical Garden in horticulture and botany and further trained through the John Nally Internship at Wave Hill. Since joining the High Line in 2016\, she has stewarded its iconic naturalistic gardens designed by Piet Oudolf. With a passion for interpreting designed landscapes in the context of ecological conservation\, she manages the High Line’s horticulture operations\, plant curation\, and programming to provide a naturalistic landscape corridor that supports biodiversity and connects people with nature.

From the extraction of fossil fuels and plastic disposal to the global resistance fighting back\, “The Story of Plastic” is a life-changing\, Emmy-winning film depicting one of the world’s most pressing environmental issues. \nAfterward\, join us for an engaging discussion on restricting plastic pollution with Katharine Owens\, Ph.D.\, a National Geographic Explorer and Fulbright Nehru fellow. Katharine is an interdisciplinary scholar who merges science\, policy\, and the arts on the topic of plastic pollution. She’s worked on plastic pollution projects worldwide\, including Connecticut\, India\, Scotland\, and the Arctic Circle. Katharine is also Professor and Chair of the Department of Politics\, Economics\, and International Studies at the University of Hartford. \nIn partnership with Bloomfield’s Conservation\, Energy & Environment Committee (CEEC). DESCRIPTION:The CT Rhododendron Society’s first meeting of the fall is scheduled for Tuesday\, 9/1/26 at the Bloomfield Community Center (330 \nPark Avenue\, Bloomfield CT). \nSocial time from 6:30-7 and presentation at 7. \nMember Sally Perkins will present “Rhododendrons for Beginners and Enthusiasts.” Sally Perkins holds a B.S. in Botany from the University of Maryland and an M.S. in Cell Biology from the University of Illinois. She began her career as a plant physiologist before transitioning into Physical Therapy\, where she worked for 30 years. John’s MS in Math got him a career in Computer Science and data analysis. Now retired\, she and her husband John spend their winters in Florida\, birding and botanizing\, and their summers at their home on Canobie Lake in Salem\, NH. \nSally and John have been members of the American Rhododendron Society (ARS) since 1990 and maintain an impressive collection of 800+ plants across their property and neighboring gardens. Their Canobie Lake garden was featured this past July in Salem Life as “An Un-be-leaf-able Rhododendron Oasis.” Despite challenges from rabbits\, voles\, drought\, and shifting climate\, they continue to cultivate an extraordinary landscape. \nThey have played a key role in advancing ploidy research in Rhododendron coordinating flow cytometry labs—work for which they received a joint ARS Gold Medal. Most recently\, they collected native deciduous azalea samples for hyperspectral imaging (HSI) research aimed at developing quick\, cost effective identification methods. \nNative deciduous azaleas remain their greatest passion\, and they promise to deliver an engaging and lively presentation.

They did their job of removing invasive mugwort at our site at Hamden Town Center Park so well\, that now we have a bare patch to fill with new native pollinator perennials. But we need to act fast. Please join us if you can for a pop-up plant installation at Hamden Town Center Park this Saturday\, August 29 from 9-11am. Heavy rain cancels. Please check back here at www.hlct.org if in doubt as to the weather. Wear gloves and sturdy shoes and bring a refillable water bottle. Tools if you have them. We’ll provide some tools. \nDirections to the site: Pull into the Hamden Middle School (2623 Dixwell Avenue) and follow the road down the hill. Turn left at the “T” and take an immediate left at the sign that says “Event Parking.”  Park and meet at the rain garden site on the side nearest the library.

DESCRIPTION:Join Grace Farms Horticulture Director Kimberly Kelly and experts from Kansas State University for a hands-on field study to safely record\, tag\, and release monarch butterflies throughout Grace Farms 80 acres of landscape.\n\nLearn how to net\, tag\, and record Monarchs in a way that supports the best outcome for healthy butterflies to survive migration\, winter\, the flight north in late spring\, and successful reproduction in late summer. This workshop ends with our a cup of our butterfly pea flower tea and a culinary treat in the Commons.\n\nOver the past few decades\, monarch butterfly populations have declined by close to 90%. As a participant of the Kansas State University’s Monarch Watch program\, Grace Farms has been working to increase the Monarch habitat and this summer we will be participating in the Monarch Watch tagging program.\n\nRecommended for ages 12 and up. Due to uneven terrain for the field portion of the workshop\, strollers\, walkers and wheelchairs are not recommended.

Are you familiar with one\, or two-touch plants that you can use to reduce fuss and constant care? \nIf you want to learn more about no-fuss\, low-maintenance gardens\, the Daytime Gardeners have an answer for you. The club is sponsoring a viewing of Kerry Anne Mendez’s video “Extreme No-Fuss\, Low-Maintenance Gardens”. This video teaches the principle of using one- or two-touch plants to avoid constant care to obtain beautiful results. Kerry is very specific in recommendations for plants\, so you know you are getting the best plant species for the best result. \nKerry Mendez is an internationally recognized expert gardener\, speaker\, and author.  She is an invited guest speaker at garden shows including the Philadelphia Garden Show and has received many awards for horticultural excellence.  Come learn from Kerry as we view her video on Tuesday\, July 28\, 2026\, at 11:00 AM at the North Haven Recreation Center\, 7 Linsley Avenue.
