SUMMARY:The Connecticut Daylily Society's September 19 meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting will be on Saturday\, September 19\, 2026. Please join us for this in-person meeting at the Sycamore Hills Recreation Center\, aka the Avon Senior Center\, 635 West Avon Rd\, Avon CT  \n12:00 pm: Doors open for a social hour.  It’s a BYO Lunch\, but we’ll have light snacks and beverages. \n1 pm: presentation by Gary Barsomian of the Boston area. He will discuss his program on breeding unique toothy daylilies with good garden character. \nGary has a wide variety of interests and manages to squeeze a bit of daylily breeding into his busy life! \nHere is a closer look at how Gary was inspired to enter the world of daylilies. \nMy grandmother Victoria inspired my love of gardening – what’s not to love about fresh tomatoes and cucumbers from your own backyard? As an adolescent\, I watched James Underwood Crockett’s Victory Garden on PBS\, and his Time-Life gardening series gave me my first introduction to daylilies. I’ve been growing them for over 50 years\, starting out by collecting Stout Medal\, Popularity Poll\, and All-America winners. \nMy professional training is in molecular genetics\, and in the 1990s I worked as a principal scientist at Genzyme. I’ve also always loved working with my hands\, and I’ve been a woodworker since 2000\, taking on a broad range of residential and commercial projects. I love a good challenge and diving deep into whatever I’m working on. \nOver the past three years\, my wife Andrea and I have spent much of our time building a net-zero energy home for our daughter Carmen on our city property – we did about 90% of the work ourselves. \nI began hybridizing daylilies six years ago. Much of our third-acre lot is intensively cultivated\, and my collection is focused primarily on toothy cultivars\, with a smaller number of ruffled or popcorn-edged varieties mixed in. At any given time\, I’m growing approximately 4\,000 seedlings for evaluation and selection. \nWe are looking forward to this intriguing presentation and connecting with our daylily friends!

Join us to learn the art of “editing”—an essential practice to refine ever-evolving naturalistic gardens. \nYuki Kaneko is the Senior Horticulture Manager at the High Line where she manages the landscape of the internationally celebrated urban public park in New York City. Born in Japan\, Yuki earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts from Tama Art University and was awarded the Blanchette H. Rockefeller Fellowship to study art in the United States. She received certificates from the New York Botanical Garden in horticulture and botany and further trained through the John Nally Internship at Wave Hill. Since joining the High Line in 2016\, she has stewarded its iconic naturalistic gardens designed by Piet Oudolf. With a passion for interpreting designed landscapes in the context of ecological conservation\, she manages the High Line’s horticulture operations\, plant curation\, and programming to provide a naturalistic landscape corridor that supports biodiversity and connects people with nature.

From the extraction of fossil fuels and plastic disposal to the global resistance fighting back\, “The Story of Plastic” is a life-changing\, Emmy-winning film depicting one of the world’s most pressing environmental issues. \nAfterward\, join us for an engaging discussion on restricting plastic pollution with Katharine Owens\, Ph.D.\, a National Geographic Explorer and Fulbright Nehru fellow. Katharine is an interdisciplinary scholar who merges science\, policy\, and the arts on the topic of plastic pollution. She’s worked on plastic pollution projects worldwide\, including Connecticut\, India\, Scotland\, and the Arctic Circle. DESCRIPTION:The CT Rhododendron Society’s first meeting of the fall is scheduled for Tuesday\, 9/1/26 at the Bloomfield Community Center (330 \nPark Avenue\, Bloomfield CT). \nSocial time from 6:30-7 and presentation at 7. \nMember Sally Perkins will present “Rhododendrons for Beginners and Enthusiasts.” Sally Perkins holds a B.S. in Botany from the University of Maryland and an M.S. in Cell Biology from the University of Illinois. She began her career as a plant physiologist before transitioning into Physical Therapy\, where she worked for 30 years. John’s MS in Math got him a career in Computer Science and data analysis. Now retired\, she and her husband John spend their winters in Florida\, birding and botanizing\, and their summers at their home on Canobie Lake in Salem\, NH. \nSally and John have been members of the American Rhododendron Society (ARS) since 1990 and maintain an impressive collection of 800+ plants across their property and neighboring gardens. Their Canobie Lake garden was featured this past July in Salem Life as “An Un-be-leaf-able Rhododendron Oasis.” Despite challenges from rabbits\, voles\, drought\, and shifting climate\, they continue to cultivate an extraordinary landscape. \nThey have played a key role in advancing ploidy research in Rhododendron coordinating flow cytometry labs—work for which they received a joint ARS Gold Medal. Most recently\, they collected native deciduous azalea samples for hyperspectral imaging (HSI) research aimed at developing quick\, cost effective identification methods. \nNative deciduous azaleas remain their greatest passion\, and they promise to deliver an engaging and lively presentation.

SUMMARY:Learning with Nature | Monarch Migration
DESCRIPTION:Join Grace Farms Horticulture Director Kimberly Kelly and experts from Kansas State University for a hands-on field study to safely record\, tag\, and release monarch butterflies throughout Grace Farms 80 acres of landscape.\n\nLearn how to net\, tag\, and record Monarchs in a way that supports the best outcome for healthy butterflies to survive migration\, winter\, the flight north in late spring\, and successful reproduction in late summer. This workshop ends with our a cup of our butterfly pea flower tea and a culinary treat in the Commons.\n\nOver the past few decades\, monarch butterfly populations have declined by close to 90%. As a participant of the Kansas State University’s Monarch Watch program\, Grace Farms has been working to increase the Monarch habitat and this summer we will be participating in the Monarch Watch tagging program.\n\nRecommended for ages 12 and up. Due to uneven terrain for the field portion of the workshop\, strollers\, walkers and wheelchairs are not recommended.
