DESCRIPTION:This comprehensive tour invites a closer look at the architecture of the River building and Barns. Take in 360–degree views of the surrounding landscapes while exploring the building’s sustainable design\, curated interiors\, and materials choices. During the tour\, sample a cup of tea from Grace Farms Tea & Coffee\, a Certified B Corp that demonstrates and educates about ethical and sustainable supply chains.\n\nThe River building\, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning firm\, SANAA\, holds LEED Gold certification for Building Design and Construction. A demonstration of our continuing efforts to be as sustainable as possible\, in 2024\, we were awarded Gold certification for Building Operations and Maintenance\, building on our LEED Silver certification in 2019.\n\nThe River building was awarded the prestigious 2014/2015 Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize (MCHAP)\, in addition to the AIA National 2017 Architecture Honor Award and AIA Connecticut 2016 Design Honor Award.\n\nThursdays and Saturdays | 10:30am – 12:00 pm

SUMMARY:Dedication Ceremony of BEE RESILIENT Garden
DESCRIPTION:The Wilton Garden Club will dedicate its new BEE RESILIENT Garden at Hillside Cemetery and Arboretum on September 22 at 2 p.m. The public is invited to attend the event and learn more about the garden and the important role native plants play in supporting pollinators and local wildlife. \nPartially funded with a BEE RESILIENT Garden Grant from the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut\, the garden was designed as a contemplative space for people visiting loved ones at the cemetery. \nThe garden features several of Doug Tallamy’s Keystone plants\, along with a variety of native perennial pollinator plants\, including milkweed. These plants provide valuable habitat and food for our native bees\, butterflies and other pollinators\, while the milkweed provides essential support for visiting monarch butterflies. \nThe garden demonstrates how even a small\, thoughtfully designed native-plant garden can provide meaningful benefits for both people and pollinators.

DESCRIPTION:In 2019\, landscape design firm Columbine LLC began a thoughtful restoration of DeRham Farm\, a historic estate overlooking the Hudson River in Garrison\, New York. Working closely with the homeowners\, the project focused on revitalizing the landscape while honoring the property’s historic character and extraordinary setting. Highlights included the restoration of a sunken garden within the remnants of an old foundation and the creation of a vibrant one-third acre native meadow designed to support pollinators and biodiversity.  Join us as we explore the transformation of this remarkable landscape\, and the process of shaping new garden spaces within a historic estate.

Join your friends and neighbors at the Hamden Land Conservation Trust for a hands-on Stewardship Event at our beautiful Winterberry Wetlands property on the Farmington Canal Trail opposite Route 10 Restaurant (3810 Whitney Avenue) Saturday\, September 26 from 10am – noon (Rain date: Sunday\, September 27\, 1 pm – 3 pm. We will be planting native pollinator perennials thanks to a generous gift from our friends at Audubon Connecticut. (IMPORTANT: Please park on the far side of the lot away from Route 10 Restaurant to leave plenty of parking for customers.) Please wear gloves and sturdy shoes\, and bring clippers\, rakes\, or a shovel (if you have them) and a refillable water bottle. Your time and energy will make a real difference in protecting and beautifying this special place.

SUMMARY:Master Class: Native Plant Seed Saving Workshop at The Fen in Sharon\, CT
DESCRIPTION:Spend an afternoon in the stunning fields of The Fen in Sharon\, Connecticut\, with botanist and seed specialist Heather Liljengren for a hands-on workshop in native seed collection. Set within expansive\, species-rich meadows on a calcareous fen\, The Fen is a native seed farm and regenerative land project seldom open to the public. This off-site field day offers a rare opportunity to learn directly from a field botanist in a working landscape shaped by seasonal rhythms\, native plant communities\, and careful stewardship. Guided by Heather’s deep knowledge of plants and seed ecology\, participants will learn how to recognize seed maturity\, collect seed responsibly\, and clean and prepare native seed for successful planting. Each participant will leave with native ecotype seed they have collected themselves\, ready to plant in their own garden.
