The Simsbury Garden Club was recently recognized with five prestigious awards for Civic Development at the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut’s annual Awards luncheon at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville, CT.
The awards were presented to the club for creating a Pollinator Garden at the Gifts of Love Farm, a local community farm that provides short term food programs and education to help families in the Greater Hartford area. The garden was installed in response to a challenge from the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut’s president to “Plant Connecticut” by planting a pollinator garden or a xeriscape garden in a public place. It will serve to attract pollinators for the crops grown at the charity farm and as a venue for education.
The Lee Bauerfeld Beautification Award is a large traveling silver cup awarded for an outstanding project in the community for work in designing, planting and tending the pollinator garden. Other awards include the Club Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Horticulture by establishing a pollinator garden and community farm with the help of almost one third of the Clubs’ active membership, Certificates of Individual Achievement Award to Lea Anne Moran and Diana Hughes for their leadership in creating the Pollinator Garden at the Gifts of Love Farm, and the Sears Civic Beautification Award from the New England Garden Clubs.
