Hill-Stead is thrilled to announce the launch of our new exhibition series, STRONG WOMEN. This first show will feature the work of Brooklyn-based art collective Hilma’s Ghost, comprised of Dannielle Tegeder and Sharmistha Ray and named after the Swedish artist and mystic, Hilma af Klint (1862-1944). (Af Klint who was virtually unknown before a revelatory exhibition at New York’s Guggenheim Museum catapult her into the spotlight in 2018.) For Hill-Stead’s show, entitled RADICAL SPIRITS: Tarot, Automatism, and Feminist Histories, Hilma’s Ghost explores the creative, spiritual, and narrative agencies of tarot, mediumship, and automatism in art-making. The works on view – new and recent paintings, drawings, and a video – will tap into the long-established, but overlooked history of these practices at Hill-Stead. Theodate Pope Riddle, Hill-Stead’s founder and a contemporary of af Klint, passionately supported exploration of the spiritual world by participating in séances with notable mediums and funding psychical research.

The exhibit runs from June 25-November 1, 2022, and is accessible during regular museum hours, with tickets available for purchase at the welcome center. Hilma’s Ghost’s ABSTRACT FUTURES TAROT decks will be available for sale at the shop for the duration of the exhibition.
