If you want your bulbs to bloom again next spring, patience is key, say the experts at Colorblends.. You must allow the foliage to turn yellow and collapse. If leaves are cut before they yellow, it will prevent the bulbs from storing up the energy required to produce next spring’s flowers.
The leaves of most small bulbs, such as crocuses, turn yellow about 6 weeks after they finish flowering. Daffodils, Camassia, Spanish Bluebells and Snowflakes take longer. So do not touch them for at least 8 weeks after the flowers fade. That means no cutting, no tying, and no braiding—let the leaves naturally turn yellow or brown before removing them.
It may look a little messy, but it’s worth it to help your bulbs flower next spring.
