The Great Wave: Japonisme at Hill-Stead Museum, on view until April 30, 2026
This exhibition explores the transformative influence of Japanese art and aesthetics on Western artists and collectors in the 19th and early 20th centuries. On view are Impressionist paintings alongside Japanese woodblock prints, netsuke, Buddhist sutras, lacquerware and other selected objects and textiles. Included are Hokusai’s The Great Wave and the exceptionally rare 8th century Nigatsu-dō Burned Sutra, which survived a 17th century fire in Tōdai-ji temple and which will return to the archives to “rest” for 10 years after this exhibition. Don’t miss this chance to see it!
Entrance is included with museum general admission.
Hill-Stead Museum is at 35 Mountain Road in Farmington. Go to HILLSTEAD.ORG.
