Mission & Vision
The Connecticut Horticultural Society is an educational organization dedicated to encouraging and improving the practice of gardening and the dissemination of horticultural information to its members and the public. The society, through its many and varied programs, seeks to encourage the enjoyment, appreciation and understanding of plants, the environment, and the art and science of gardening.
“Not to go forward is to go backwards.”
Background:
Established in 1887, Connecticut Horticultural Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit, membership-supported organization. The society was established as a means for estate gardeners, florists and gardening enthusiasts to socialize, share their common interests and learn from each other. Its hallmark has always been an off-season speaker program featuring quality experts in the art and science of horticulture. Over time its offerings to members have expanded to include hands-on workshops and a travel program. Since 1959, the society has honored and supported students of horticulture with scholarships. Each February, for more than forty years, the society has participated in the CT Flower & Garden Show as a branding and membership opportunity that helps promote its educational mission to show-goers. Ten issues of our professional newsletter is electronically mailed to members each year.
Programs:
The society has an active educational program that includes daytime, evening and weekend lectures for adults. Every two years the Education Committee presents a full-day garden symposium featuring presentations by industry experts. A fund raising aspect – vendors and a silent auction – further supports the educational mission.
The travel program administered by member Friendship Tours, has an ever changing offering of day and multi-day trips.
The society could not exist without our member volunteers. A salaried part-time administrator and director of communications provide continuity and integral structure.
